Art From Around the World: Assignment 3

Thomas Tiernan
Assignment 3

Leonardo da Vinci was considered one of the greatest artists in history. Not only was he an artist, but Da Vinci was also an even better drawer. Although several of his paintings are unfinished, he has hundreds of drawings, each with immense detail. He worked as a sculptor and would always sketch his ideas. He probably did not think that one day his sketches would be considered historic art. His drawing, Five Characters in a Comic Scene 1490, shows 5 mischievous looking men huddled around conversing about something.  The artistic details drawn into the men must have taken years of work. The three men in the artwork are looking at one thing, while the other two are staring at each other. This drawing reminded me of my friends and I in a way, because one of us would be making a ridiculous face like the man in the back even though no one would be paying attention.

Painting is the process of using paint in a picture, and has many different styles of painting. Zhang Daqian is a great painter in my opinion. He creates a great Asian style scroll painting of mountains and what looks like a lake. The use of smeared watercolor really improves the painting and adds a mood to the art. Art of Asian nature has always interested me, and Zhang’s painting “Mountains Clearing After Rain” shows beautiful art done with watercolor. Zhang Daqian was one of the best known Chinese artists of the twentieth century, and his traditional style of Chinese art is popular in America as well. Another one of his famous paintings is of this natural Chinese scenery. The colors used were very mild and had a soft feeling to the painting. I enjoy a lot of Daqian’s art, and will continue to use his art as examples.
