Art History
Assignment 2
Direction
and movement are essential visual elements used in a lot of art. Due to the
fact that our eyes tend to follow lines in art, movement and direction are used
to simplify and make the art stand out. Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photo of
Abruzzi Italy in page 80 demonstrates the use of good direction. The railings
in this photo are directions that lead to the art. For example, the first rail
on the bottom of the picture leads to women carrying a tray of bread. The next
rail then leads to a group of more women working, which is a flow of motion in
one picture. This picture on page 81 by Thomas Eakins of the two rowers is a
great example of how movement is used to make the art seem life like. Examples
of movement would be the clouds, which seem to be moving, and the rowers, who
are perfectly parallel to the horizon. Another artist who used direction and
movement to convey his thoughts in art, was Matisse. In this painting of the 5
women dancing, Matisse portrays a circular motion being created by the dancing
women. I believe that direction and movement are one of the most important
topics in visual elements and should be looked at more. The importance of flow
and movement with a source of direction is critical for art.
